Traditions and Folklore in Friesland

Vaulting over water

“Fierljeppen” is a typical Frisian piece of folklore, born from the necessity of farm boys to jump across the many canals traversing the land. This has grown into a sport and this may be seen during festivities, like here in the village of Kimswerd, just to the south of Harlingen. After a sprint and jump up the pole on the canal bottom, he climbs to the top while vaulting across the water.
